How to Stay Healthy in Unhealthy Environments
I recently got an email from a reader and they wanted to confide in me about a problem that is not uncommon- how to stay motivated and carry on your health journey if everyone around you does the opposite? That person told me she enjoyed a healthy, plant-based inspired lifestyle for more than 10 years…Then, because of her work/ business, she was forced to move to a rather depressing part of her country where most people are not at all interested in any holistic transformation. Not to mention any basic self-care. Now, it takes her more than an hour to drive to get some healthy stuff. In the local stores in her area, people actually conform to unhealthy foods because, again, most people don’t care what they eat. To make things worse- she feels laughed at whenever she shows any interest for a healthy lifestyle…In the end, she put on weight, got a bit depressed and asked me for support to get back on track. She asked me for tips and resources on living a healthy life in an unhealthy town…how to break free from bad environments….In her own words: “I can’t even find yoga-it’s that bad. I guess I’ve hit rock bottom and am just looking for support in any way. I appreciate all you do and put out into the world”
Be a Holistic Warrior. Even in Unhealthy Environment
This issue is not anything uncommon or unusual. And it’s not easy to keep on track if nobody around you feels inspired to join you, no matter how hard you try. I have been there many times, and I believe my answer can help many people out there. So here’s my reply:
“Thank You for taking your time to write this email.
Really means a lot to me!
I totally understand your problem, many people face it as well.
Here’s what I think:
- Even the healthiest of the healthiest occasionally relapse into bad habits. It’s normal. Be self-loving and self-aware. Take it with some self-humor and then focus on just 1 thing you can change today
(for example drink lemon water instead of a soft drink, or maybe walk instead of driving, if possible).
- Most people are miserable and unhealthy. Very few people want to change and actually go through the process that is requited to achieve any positive lifestyle transformation. I don’t mean to be
negative, but most people get jealous or judgmental whenever they see someone who wants to be healthy, passionate, successful (whatever it means to them) and create a mindful life.
It’s good to accept this truth. Change is not always easy. It means going against the grain…
- Personally, I somehow managed to push myself into a healthier lifestyle (still working on it), even though everyone around me was unhealthy. Eventually, if you stick to it, and do your thing,
many people will get inspired:) Your actions can inspire other people. Don’t explain things, don’t tell them why. Just show them the results and get them inspired (use it as your motivation).
Most small towns in America, Europe and Australia are not healthy and it’s hard to find healthy foods (unless you live in a big city, which can also be unhealthy in itself).
But…we can always find some fruits and veggies. Look for online stores and arrange a delivery so that you can save up your time.
Personally, I noticed that adding more water and fresh raw foods into my diet can be a real game changer, even if I am not that perfect with my diet…
It’s easy to snack on them, even at work:)
4. Physical activity is very important too.
Last year I cancelled gym membership as it was too far away and it was too crowded during my free schedule (whenever I could actually make it).
Here it’s not like 24 h gyms in the US. Anyway, I got myself an elliptical machine instead.
I use it almost every day for short workouts at home, first thing in the morning. It makes me feel energized and positive. Then, I feel like carrying on and making my day healthy. How you start your day…
Works great for me! Now, I don’t have any excuses and save a lot of time and money too. It’s good to be proactive, not reactive. There is always a solution, there must be! And, we as holistic warriors focus on solutions and move forward.
I also looked up a few workouts and yoga sessions on YouTube.
Always go on YouTube and Instagram for inspiration. You can surround yourself with “virtual friends”.
As for mindset, listening to Tony Robbins and reading his books has helped me a lot.He talks a lot about focus and how focus can change our lives.Even if right now, you are in a really dark and negative place…
I like to have a plan B. In my case it’s Organifi- alkaline green powder supplement that I use when I find myself too pressed for time to shop for organic veggies and juice them.
Real life saver if you ask me.
Finally, I have a book called: Alkaline Diet Motivation, It’s also available in audio so that you can listen to it and feed your mind with positive information, and use it to slowly move forward with your health and wellness goals.
Also- remember it’s not about perfection, it’s about progress!
Even if you get off track (everyone does ocassionaly), you can always re-commit and enjoy the process again and again!
Wishing you the best of luck on your journey. ”
